Daniel P. Bolger - Our Year of War: Two Brothers, Vietnam, and a Nation Divided — in conversation with Chuck and Tom Hagel — at Politics and Prose at The Wharf

Chuck Hagel, former Defense Secretary, and his younger brother Tom served in Vietnam during the most grueling year of the war, 1967-‘68, when nearly 17,000 Americans were killed in action. The only two brothers to have served in the same infantry squad, the Hagels fought together in the Tet Offensive and saved each other’s lives on two separate occasions. Yet the war marked them differently. After their year in Vietnam, one supported the U.S. intervention, while the other opposed it. Bolger, who retired as a lieutenant general after thirty-five years in the Army, service that included commanding troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, vividly retraces the Hagels’ combat experience, using their story as a lens to explore the war’s divisive effects throughout American society.
