Dana Thomas - Fashionopolis: The Price of Fast Fashion and the Future of Clothes — at Politics and Prose at Union Market

Upcoming Event
Sunday, September 8, 2019 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

The author of Gods and Kings and Deluxe, Thomas has covered fashion and culture for a wide range of publications since beginning her career with the Washington Post’s Style section in 1988. Her new book is a detailed overview of the global fashion industry, a sector that employs one-sixth of the world’s population, produces 80 billion garments a year, and has steadily increased fashion’s historical exploitation of labor, the environment, and intellectual property. But globalization and fast fashion have also spurred a movement to reinvent the industry on a smaller, more humane scale, and Thomas introduces the visionaries who are reclaiming traditional craft, launching sustainable technologies such as printing 3-D clothes, recycling fabric, and developing clean-denim processing—and creating better fashion, to boot.
