Damon Krukowski - Ways of Hearing — at Politics and Prose at Union Market
Author of The New Analog, drummer for Galaxie 500, and half of the folk-rock duo Damon & Naomi, Krukowski expands on his Ways of Hearing podcast to explore how the switch from analog to digital audio is changing not just what we hear but our perceptions of time, space, love, money, and power. Digital time, for example, is designed for machines, and digital technology compresses human voices, stripping them of context—we get a pure signal, but, with none of the messiness of noise, perhaps an impoverished experience. Modeled on John Berger’s classic Ways of Seeing, which gave 20th-century viewers new frameworks through which to look at art, Krukowski’s book offers a set of tools for critical listening in the digital age.
