Kim, contributing editor for Apogee Journal, won PEN America’s Story Prize for Emerging Writers, and her eagerly-awaited first novel is a powerful story of love, war, and family. Set in 1950s Korea and based on Kim’s grandmother’s experiences, the narrative follows sixteen-year-old Haemi Lee as she, her brother, and their widowed mother flee their home just ahead of the invading communist army from the North. In the refugee camp, Haemi is courted by a friend’s wealthy cousin. For the sake of her family, she marries him, though he is not the man she loves, and her decision will have far-reaching consequences.

In her powerhouse debut novel, Hughes, an award-winning Irish poet, introduces the unforgettable Gael Foess, a woman determined to live her life as she sees fit. Fiercely independent and ambitious, she’s nonetheless at the mercy of social and economic forces she can’t control. When her father, a financier, abandons the family in the wake of the 2008 crisis, Gael feels it’s her responsibility to protect her younger, vulnerable brother. To do so she leaves Dublin for London, then Manhattan, looking to make her fortune in the art world, but gradually leaving behind more than she intended to.
