Christopher Tilghman - Thomas and Beal in the Midi: A Novel

Upcoming Event
Sunday, May 12, 2019 - 3:00pm to 4:00pm

Tilghman’s first novel, Mason’s Retreat, was praised for the luminous quality of its prose and its rich portrayal of the complicated dynamics of the Mason and Bayly families, whose history he continued in  The Right-Hand Shore. In the latest volume of this compelling saga Tilghman delves back to 1894 and leaves the Eastern Shore to follow Thomas Bayly and his wife Beal to France, where the inter-racial couple hopes to escape the censure they’ve incurred in post-Reconstruction America. The two go first to Paris, where Beal charms the artists of the Latin Quarter. Just as she glimpses the possibilities of a very different kind of life, Thomas takes them to the Languedoc, where they again set down rural roots, this time with a vineyard.
