Buckley’s latest novel is a richly evoked, deftly plotted historical romp, full of humor both droll and bawdy. Set in Britain in 1664, the narrative recounts the adventures of one Baltasar “Balty” St. Michel, a dissolute twenty-four-year-old living on the generosity of his brother-in-law, Samuel Pepys. At last out of patience, Pepys sends Balty to the American colonies to track down two judges who fled after helping to execute Charles I. Arriving in Boston, Balty finds a dizzying world of Puritans and half-tamed wilderness. Meanwhile, Pepys is preparing Britain for war with the Dutch. Buckley, who honed his talent with cinematic political satires such as Thank You for Smoking, won the 2004 Thurber Prize for American Humor.
