Chris Stamey - A Spy in the House of the Loud: New York Songs and Stories

Upcoming Event
Sunday, June 17, 2018 - 3:00pm to 4:00pm

Before he co-founded the legendary group the dB’s, Stamey arrived in New York in the ‘70s as an aspiring twenty-two-year-old musician at the dawn of the indie music scene. Caught up in the fresh possibilities of punk and other new streams of electric music, Stamey became an integral part of the action that rejected the stale, corporate enterprise music had become. Intertwining his personal story with a hand-picked “jukebox” of significant songs, Stamey, also a producer, gives a rich inside look at the period’s prominent bands—Television, Talking Heads, R.E.M.—discusses the process of songwriting, and recounts the inspiration behind many of his own compositions, telling the story of the period’s music not as a punk anthem, but as the coming-of-age of a talented Southern artist.
