The central character of Cander’s accomplished third novel is a Blüthner piano. Constructed in turn-of-the-century Germany, in 1962 it’s given to an eight-year-old Soviet girl, Katya, who makes it the focus of her dreams and desires. But when she grows up, marries, and emigrates to the U.S., the piano, like much else in her life, is lost in the shuffle. It surfaces again in California in 2012, the property of Clara, who received it from her father just before her parents died in a fire. Now a mechanic, she’s never learned to play, and when she decides to sell the instrument, she finds an eager buyer—and much more. Rich and engaging, Cander’s novel explores a medley of inter-related themes, from creativity to loss, friendship to immigration.
