Benjamin’s second novel was one of the literary highlights of 2018, appearing on innumerable Best of lists. Now available in paperback, it’s both a moving family story and a fascinating exploration of the question: if you knew the date of your death, how would you live your life? This is more than a thought experiment for the four Gold children, who visit a fortune-teller one day in 1969. That visit informs their decisions for the next several decades, never in predictable or simple ways. As Benjamin recounts their lives—one moving to California in search of love, one becoming a Las Vegas magician, one engaging in longevity research, and one earning an MD and enlisting in the Army—she combines magnificent storytelling with profound meditations on destiny, illusion, and faith.

After several successful books for young adults, Santopolo made an impressive transition to adult novels with The Light We Lost, now being adapted for film. Her second novel is a compelling story of love and self-discovery that centers on Nina Gregory, a woman raised to believe in the conventional values of family and integrity. She’s especially close to her father, owner of New York City’s glamorous Gregory Hotels. But when he dies, he leaves an unexpected legacy that tears Nina’s world in two. On one side is her old boyfriend, who holds the values she once held, and on the other is another man and another kind of life.
