Cassie Chambers - Hill Women: Finding Family and a Way Forward in the Appalachian Mountains — in conversation with E.J. Dionne

Upcoming Event
Sunday, January 12, 2020 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

In her eye-opening memoir, Chambers recounts her journey from Owsley County, the poorest county in Kentucky, to Harvard Law School and a position as vice chair of the Kentucky Democratic Party. The key to her mobility is the strength of Appalachia’s women. Though the region has been hit hard by the collapse of the coal industry, the opioid crisis, and widespread domestic violence, its communities are held together by the wisdom and perseverance of women like Chambers’s grandmother, a child bride and mother of seven; her aunt, a hard-working tobacco farmer; and her mother, the first of her family to finish high school and college. In telling their stories Chambers overturns “hillbilly” myths and shines much-needed light on these oft-neglected women.
