The Escuela Moderna was founded in Barcelona in 1901 to "educate the working class in a rational, secular and non-coercive setting" with the eventual goal of ushering in a new society free of authority. Though it was closed only five years later and its founder, Francisco Ferrer (1859–1909), was executed for sedition, the initiative became an international movement, with Modern Schools opening in Cuba, London, and, in 1911, New York. In this collection of writings by and about Ferrer, Bray, author of Antifa and Translating Anarchy, and Haworth, editor of Anarchist Pedagogies, have gathered pieces never before available in English to present a comprehensive picture of Ferrer’s anarchist vision and put his ideas in the wider context of those of his comrades and critics.
