Cadwell Turnbull - The Lesson — at Politics and Prose at The Wharf
One of the first science fiction novels set in the Virgin Islands, Turnbull’s debut follows events on Water Island, where a space ship piloted by the super-advanced Ynaa docked some five years ago. The aliens refuse to disclose their mission, and after one of the visitors kills an islander the uneasy coexistence of the races is about to explode in widespread violence. Turnbull, winner of the 2014 NCSU Prize for Short Fiction for his story "Ears,” and whose work has appeared in Nightmare, Lightspeed, and Asimov's Science Fiction, combines mystery, romance, and tragedy to explore questions of race, culture, exploitation, and the legacy of colonialism.
