Hayes, a photographer, an insomniac, and the author of Sleep Demons and The Anatomist, left San Francisco for New York in 2008, hoping for a fresh start. Still reeling from the recent death of his partner and feeling unmoored professionally, he bonded with his new home at once, finding Gotham’s energy not just consoling but life-giving, perfect for long night walks with his camera. Then he met Oliver Sacks and found love again. Illustrated with Hayes’s photographs, this warm memoir of their relationship, which ended with Dr. Sacks’s death in 2015, is both a tribute to a man and a celebration of New York.
