Barry Lopez - Horizon

Upcoming Event
Thursday, April 4, 2019 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

One of our finest nature writers, Lopez has produced distinguished work in several genres and is best known for his classic Arctic Dreams, winner of the 1986 National Book Award. Much of his writing focuses on environmental and humanitarian issues, exploring the complex relationship between human cultures and physical landscapes. His research has taken him through some seventy countries, and in this new collection of essays he combines memoir, history, travel writing, and philosophy to give us an indelible portrait of the current state of the planet. Ranging pole to pole with stops in Oregon, the Galápagos, Africa, and Australia, Lopez explores both geography and the history of exploration itself, from movements of the earliest peoples across Skraeling Island to today’s eco-tourists. Talking with scientists, artists, and local residents, Lopez offers a deeply considered vision of how to live in a broken world.
