Austin Smith - Flyover Country: Poems & Dora Malech - Stet: Poems — at Politics and Prose at Union Market

Upcoming Event
Sunday, November 11, 2018 - 5:00pm to 6:00pm

Rooted in his Midwestern upbringing, Smith’s second collection of poems takes us into the daily realities of a part of the country most people overlook. While showing us a particular geography of farmhouses, barns, and barbed wire, Smith also shows how these are connected to global events and concerns, linking farmyard activities to drone strikes, genocide, and fleeing refugees. The award-winning author of Almanac, Smith teaches at Stanford.

Taking her title from the proofreading term for cancelling a revision—the Latin means “let it stand”—Malech explores the flexibility of various kinds of commitment. In poems as playful as they are serious, Malech, and assistant professor at Johns Hopkins and the award-winning author of two previous collections, Say So and Shore Ordered Ocean, deftly uses constrained forms such as the anagram to see what it means to make or break a vow, start a family, and create art from life’s ever-changing and always uncertain circumstances.
