Audrey Kurth Cronin - Power to the People: How Open Technological Innovation Is Arming Tomorrow's Terrorists

Upcoming Event
Saturday, November 2, 2019 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

A leading expert on security and terrorism, Cronin, professor of international security and founding director of the Center for Security, Innovation, and New Technology at American University, looks at how technical innovation is changing the way lethal power can be used. Considering new technologies including AI, robotics, cyber weapons, and 3-D printing, Cronin shows how the sharing economy is helping ordinary people gain access to weapons formerly available to states, a shift that, following historical patterns, is likely to fuel new kinds of political violence. Arguing for strategic actions, Cronin recommends ways we can ensure that power continues to flow to the people while curbing the inherent risks.
