Arnold A. Offner - Hubert Humphrey: The Conscience of the Country

Upcoming Event
Saturday, September 15, 2018 - 3:30pm to 4:30pm

Hubert H. Humphrey (1911-1978) was vice president from 1965 to 1969 and represented Minnesota in the Senate from 1949 to 1964 and from 1971 to 1978. Though he’s often overlooked today, Offner’s authoritative biography shows that Humphrey was an outstanding statesman and role model. He was the first major politician from either party to champion the civil rights movement, and his career was consistently guided by high moral principles and integrity. Drawing on a wide range of archival sources, Offner, emeritus professor of history at Lafayette College and author of books including Another Such Victory, charts Humphrey’s impressive legislative achievements and reveals new details about his complicated relationship with Lyndon Johnson, including Johnson’s collusion with Nixon to deny Humphrey the presidency.
