Arjun Singh Sethi - American Hate: Survivors Speak Out — at Politics and Prose at Union Market

Upcoming Event
Thursday, August 30, 2018 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

In this important and unsettling collection of thirteen testimonials by people who have been targets of the bigotry, bullying, threats, and violence that have surged since 2016, Sethi, an activist and human rights lawyer, forces us to see the real impact of this culture of hatred. The change in the nation’s response to diversity is undeniable; Asmaa Albukaie, a migrant from Syria, found a welcoming community in Idaho in 2014, but now her adopted home is openly hostile and she fears for her safety. Here in D.C., Taylor Dumpson, an African-American woman, was greeted by nooses on her first day as American University’s student body president. In Tulsa, Oklahoma, in August 2016 Khalid Jabara was murdered by a man who had harassed and threatened him and his family because they were Arab American. Telling their stories in their own words, these survivors actively resist the forces of white supremacy that would silence them, and their courage is a call to action to all of us to combat hate.
