Andrew Martin - Early Work & Randall Klein - Little Disasters

Upcoming Event
Saturday, July 14, 2018 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

Smart, funny, and full of lively, well-drawn characters, Martin’s first novel follows an ambitious young writer as he struggles to breathe life into his fiction. Though Peter has the trappings of a successful hipster writer—irony, connections, the right taste in books, a teaching job at a women’s prison—he can’t quite live up to his own self-image or match his medical-student girlfriend’s drive and direction. Then he meets Leslie, a more confident and daring writer than he is, and has his complacencies shaken up over the course of a summer in Virginia. Martin’s short stories have appeared in publications including The Paris Review, his nonfiction in The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, and others.

Klein’s suspenseful debut novel charts a year in the intertwined lives of two couples. Michael and Paul meet outside a Brooklyn hospital where their wives are both giving birth and strike up a friendship. Later, Michael is attracted to Paul’s wife, Jenny, and the two embark on an affair. The novel opens with that affair a year old and at a turning point. Told from the alternating points of view of the two men, the narrative recounts the evolution of the four characters’ relationships, doing so on a hot summer day when a catastrophe has shut down the New York subway system and neither Michael nor Paul can get to Jenny in Brooklyn.
