McNamara was one of five members of the Annapolis Capital staff shot on June 28, 2018. At the time of his death he had covered sports at all levels for more than thirty years and was completing his first book, a history of Washington high schools’ contributions to basketball. Based on 150 interviews, the work traces the game’s evolution and trends through profiles of athletes and coaches active in the city’s schools, including E.B. Henderson, Earl Lloyd, and Spingarn High School’s Elgin Baylor and Dave Bing, both ranked among the NBA’s greatest. Andrea Chamblee, McNamara's widow and coauthor—and herself a veteran local sports reporter—will present this groundbreaking celebration of D.C. basketball.
