Alyson Richman - The Secret of Clouds & Pam Jenoff - The Lost Girls of Paris

Upcoming Event
Saturday, March 9, 2019 - 3:30pm to 4:30pm

In a departure from her acclaimed historical fiction, notably The Velvet Hours, The Garden of Letters, and The Lost Wife, Richman’s new novel unfolds in 1990s Long Island to explore the lives of a young teacher and a little boy too ill to attend school. For Maggie, the challenges are many of tutoring Yuri, the son of Ukrainian immigrants, but once she discovers his interest in baseball, the two grow closer. Then as she learns more about his family’s complicated past, she’s also haunted by her own difficult upbringing. With compassion and insight, Richman traces the common bond of humanity that finally gives both Maggie and Yuri the strength to face their circumstances.

Jenoff‘s bestselling The Orphan’s Tale powerfully explored the difficulties of love and survival in World War II Europe. Her new novel, based on actual events, returns to the period to tell the little known story of the brave women who served in a London-based spy operation. Opening in Manhattan in 1946, the narrative follows Grace Healy, a war widow, who finds a suitcase containing the photos of twelve women. The cache belonged to Eleanor Trigg, leader of a ring of female secret agents, and the faces are those of spies who disappeared in Occupied Europe. Tracking down their fates, Jenoff blends meticulous research with adventure and a moving story of female friendship and empowerment.
