Alexis Coe - You Never Forget Your First: A Biography of George Washington — in conversation with Jamelle Bouie — at Union Market

Upcoming Event
Wednesday, February 5, 2020 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Coe follows Alice + Freda Forever with a fresh and lively look at George Washington that firmly separates the man from the legend. The host of Audible’s “No Man’s Land,” co-host of “Presidents Are People, Too!” and a consulting producer on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s forthcoming History Channel series on George Washington, Coe views the founder through a feminist lens. Drawing on previously unexamined archival material, she recounts how he was raised by a determined single mother, charts the stubbornness that caused him never to back down, relates the youthful error that caused an international incident, and traces the effects of his failure to face the contradictions of a free nation reliant on slave labor.
