Adam Gopnik - At the Strangers' Gate: Arrivals in New York — in conversation with Ron Charles

Upcoming Event
Thursday, September 7, 2017 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Gopnik gave us a charming yet realistic picture of his family’s life in France in Paris to the Moon, then chronicled his return to the U.S. in Through the Children’s Gate. His latest collection of personal essays jumps back in time to the 1980s, when he and his wife-to-be first came to New York from Montreal. The book tells two intertwined stories. In one, Gopnik is nostalgic without romanticizing as he recalls New York, when the city was beset by rising homicide rates and a crack epidemic. In the other, he gives his distinctive take on the iconic journey of the aspiring artist arriving at the city of his dreams, retracing his steps from library jobs to positions at Condé Nast, MoMa, and in 1986, to The New Yorker, where he is still a staff writer.

Gopnik will be in conversation with Ron Charles, fiction editor for The Washington Post’s “Book World.”
