Join us this winter as we read two American poets who write intensely and exactly about the quotidian and the contingent. If you love plain language that elevates everyday experience, you will relish Mark Doty and Stephen Dunn, who make out of individual experience their respective poems of the universal.

“The art lies in hiding the art” says Horace. Doty and Dunn transform the mundane, the typical and the tragic into a lens for daily transcendence. Born into the middle of the 20th century, they probe both an everyman persona (Dunn) and an urban intelligence tinged with loss (Doty).

About Dunn, Billy Collins has written: “…his poems would not be so strikingly naked were they not so carefully dressed.” About Doty, Phil Levine said: “… (he) is a maker of big, risky, fearless poems in which ordinary human experience becomes music.” Dunn’s many awards include the Pulitzer Prize (2001). Doty received the National Book Award and is the only American to be awarded Britain’s most prestigious award for a book of poetry, the T.S. Eliot Prize.

These poets work squarely in the 20th century tradition of “the well-made poem.” Though mannerly, they are never ordinary, and you will find their perceptions, insights and language hugely compelling.
