Forging their notions of freedom, ethics, and experience independently and in very different ways, Simone de Beauvoir, Simone Weil, and Jean-Paul Sartre nevertheless share the philosophical quest to parse out the ways in which humans construct themselves. In The Ethics of Ambiguity, Beauvoir stresses the importance of the “other” when contemplating ethical choices. In The Need for Roots, Weil posits that cultural maladies can only be sufficiently addressed when citizens gain rootedness in their communities. And, in Existentialism is a Humanism, Sartre argues that we humans, void of any essential template for making choices, exist primarily to design our essential natures. This course, then, is an interrogation of existence and its possible meanings for human behavior. Three Fridays: August 2, 9, 16, 6-8 p.m.
