Dashiell Hammett revolutionized American literature with just five novels and a handful of short fictions, plus his film-related writing. Often called the father of hardboiled fiction, Hammett also pioneered the art form we now call noir, especially in the three great novels that are the focus of this class: Red Harvest, The Maltese Falcon, and The Glass Key.

Hammett was a political player in everything from the glories of the Corcoran Museum of Art to the goriest days of McCarthyism, and each of these novels reflects a political vision. Through discussion and lecture, this class will explore these three great noir novels, along with the politics, American culture, and personal choices they reveal.

Red Harvest, Dashiell Hammett
The Maltese Falcon, Dashiell Hammett
The Glass Key, Dashiell Hammett

James Grady is best known for his first novel that became the Robert Redford movie “Three Days of the Condor.” Nominated for an Edgar Award by the Mystery Writers of America, and awarded the Grand Prix Du Roman Noir, and Italy’s Raymond Chandler Medal, Grady is a prolific writer with at least a dozen novels and twice that number of short stories. He's taught numerous classes for Politics and Prose on Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, James Cain, John LeCarre, and noir, private eye, and spy novels.
