This two-hour “crash course” will give you the basic vocabulary, cultural knowledge, and psychological orientation you need to get off on the right foot in France. You will learn some simple but very important rules of French etiquette, as well as how to say, and how to use, essential phrases that should make your interactions much easier during your trip. This class will help you gain a better understanding of French life, culture, and habits, and will offer an approach to help you fully enjoy your time in la belle France.

There is no required text, but the following book is recommended reading for either before or after this class:

Janet Hulstrand is a writer, editor, writing coach, and teacher who divides her time between France and the U.S. She writes frequently for Bonjour Paris and France Revisited, as well as for her blog, Writing from the Heart, Reading for the Road. Each summer she teaches "Paris: A Literary Adventure" for the Queens College, CUNY study abroad program in Paris. She also teaches writing workshops in Essoyes, a village in the Champagne region. Her e-book, Demystifying the French: How to Love Them, and Make Them Love You, will be published this year.
