Lecture, discussion and writing exercises. This live class will be recorded and available for later viewing.

In this course we will go out into nature and our personal histories to write poetry that comes out of the natural world. We will consider grass and rain as works of art worthy of poetic response.  We will experiment with the poetic forms that use nature or other elements outside of the poet to create poetry that matter to us and to others. We will look at the ode, ekphrastic, sestina, villanelle, ghazal, zuihitsu and the map. We will read masterful attempts at eco-poetry in order to relish and to learn.

By registering for this class, students agree they will follow these terms:

  • Will not share overtly obscene, hateful, or objectionable content. 

  • Will not share content that students do not have the rights to. 

Any work that perpetuates violence, inappropriate sexual conduct, racism, or negative stereotypes will not receive edits by the instructor or be circulated in the class.

Tiphanie Yanique is the author of the novel, Monster in the Middle, which was published in 2021 and on numerous best of the year lists. Monster in the Middle was a finalist for the Lambda Literary Awards and is a finalist for the Townsend Prize. Her writing has won the Boston Review Prize in Fiction, a Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers Award, a Pushcart Prize, an Academy of American Poet's Prize and two Fulbright Scholarships. She is also an outspoken activist on behalf of the Caribbean, having appeared on Democracy Now! with Amy Goodman, and published an op-ed in The New York Times on the US response to hurricanes in the Caribbean. Tiphanie is from the Virgin Islands and is a professor at Emory University.
