ONLINE CLASS: Women Writers and the Rise of the English Novel (2078)

Four Thursdays: July 2, 9, 16, 23 from Noon to 2 p.m.

$110.00 (10% off for members)

The beginning of the English novel is dominated by male writers in many versions of literary history. But did you know that the first novel in english was written by a woman, most of the novels published in the 1700’s were written by women, and the most prolific novelist of the 18th century was also a woman? In this discussion-based, seminar-style class, we’ll explore the origins of the english novel by reading three women writers who contributed to its growth and prominence as a genre. Our first class will focus on Aphra Behn’s Oroonoko  (1688) arguably the first English novel. The second class will explore Eliza Haywood’s Love in Excess (1719-1720): Haywood was a prolific novelist famous for racy plots that were permissible in the more liberal 18th century. For our last two classes we’ll read Frances Burney’s Evelina: Or the History of  Young Lady’s Entrance into the World (1778). Burney’s novels featuring young female protagonists are seen as precursors to Austen’s work. Four Thursdays: July 2, 9, 16, 23 from Noon to 2 p.m. Online Class.
