For writers of fiction and creative nonfiction, objects from the past can possess incantatory powers. If they are able to go beyond what they consciously know when contemplating objects from the past, writers can call forth language and narrative from that take them by surprise. For this three-session course, the teachers have created a new set of writing exercises, based on heirloom objects, designed to unleash students’ imaginations in the realm of language and story. These exercises will encourage writers to think beneath the surface, avoid easy sentiment, focusing, instead, on conflict and character. Class time is divided between writing and discussion: constructive feedback from teachers and fellow students is seen as crucial to the creative enterprise.

Three Sundays: October 10, 17 and 24 from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
