Strangers On Our Shores: Secrecy, the Marriage Plot, and Vengeance in the 18th and 19th Century Novel

Before Netflix’s regency fantasy series Bridgerton and the real life tensions between the Sussexes and the British Royal family, 18th and 19th-century novels dramatized the desires and disillusionment of people of colour in British and European spaces of wealth, power, and privilege. In this course, we will read Madame de Graffigny’s 1747 novel Letters from a Peruvian Princess, which depicts the fears of an Incan princess kidnapped during the conquest of Peru. We will also discuss the anonymously-written novel The Woman of Colour and the emotional life of its biracial Jamaican heroine who reluctantly travels to England for marriage under the conditions of her father’s will. In the final weeks of our class, we will read tales of unrequited love and revenge in Ourika and Georges, respectively. Claire de Duras’ Ourika (1823), based on the life of a Senegalese woman raised in the French aristocracy, is the first European novel with a black heroine. Finally, we will explore Alexandre Dumas’ Georges, a precursor to The Count of Monte Cristo that centers on the vengeance of his mixed-race hero, Georges Munier, after he is confronted by the racism of his peers. Four Wednesdays: June 30, July 7, 14, 21 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. EST Online Class.
