What better way to understand a country than through a charmingly penned set of stories about its citizens? This class spotlights Land of Big Numbers, Te-Ping Chen’s recently published debut collection of short stories about contemporary China and the Chinese diaspora. A Beijing-based reporter for the Wall Street Journal from 2014 to 2018, Chen paints a vivid picture of the burgeoning aspirations of individuals and communities in contemporary China: ranging from the rural poor to the urban middle-class, and from political dissenters to Communist Party loyalists. It is a must read for anyone interested in 21st-century Chinese culture and society. One Thursday: July 22 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. EST Online
