In this course we will be examining the legacy of the French and British empires, the resurgence of imperialism and neo-colonialism in the post-Cold War era, and the impact of these international phenomena on Western domestic politics. The course will be centered around “Empires of the Mind: The Colonial Past and the Politics of the Present” by Robert Gildea, Professor of Modern History at the University of Oxford. We will also analyze how dissimilar (but entwined) histories of conquest, settler colonialism, racial slavery, and struggles for freedom shaped—and continue to shape—our world. Two Thursdays: April 29 and May 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. EST Online Class.
