The Year of The White Tiger

In 2008, Aravind Adiga won the Booker prize for The White Tiger. The novel is brilliantly narrated by the low-caste Indian chauffeur, son of a rick-shaw puller, Halwai Balram. Balram arrives from “The Darkness” of rural India and drives himself to the top in New Delhi where a privileged city couple provides him with the vehicle. Fueled by ambition, thrust into mayhem, and inspired to murder, Balram eventually becomes “Bangalore’s least known success story.”

The Southeast Asian answer to Native Son, Balram’s self-professed “Autobiography of a Half-Baked Indian” bristles with entrepreneurial ruthlessness, underdog empowerment, and cunning opportunism.

In early 2021,Ramin Bahrani’s film adaptation of the novel was released on Netflix, drawing a global audience towards this jagged tale of upward mobility in the midst of lock-down.

In this class we will examine the unique language, voice, settings and characters of The White Tiger in the context of post-colonial literature and confessional narratives. Two Tuesdays: August 3 and 10, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. ET Online Class.
