Meter may be poetry’s best-kept secret—and scansion (the art of mapping meter) is the key to its delectable treasures. Now poet Annie Finch guides us through great poems in the beautiful, rolling dactylic rhythm, epic meter of the heart and of compassion. How can scanning dactylic poems help unlock their beauties, meanings, and dynamics? What is the best way to scan a dactylic poem? And how does this ancient meter manifest itself even in contemporary free verse? We will delve into dactylic mysteries by chanting, hearing, and mapping the music of poets from Homer, Longfellow, Whitman, and Dunbar to Audre Lorde and Allen Ginsberg, with optional time to scan poems on your own as well.
