Will this concluding volume of In Search of Lost Time impress us as a memento mori or as the revelation of a threshold to hope and joy?  Paris under bombardment as Pompeii, a world war overturning social and moral order, the disfiguring by age of many of the central characters of Proust’s epic novel: how can this dark material complete Proust’s narrator’s quest?

We will explore in our discussions Proust’s aesthetic doctrines and psychological understanding while we approach our personal evaluations of the whole work. Is the pattern indeed a “meticulously executed mosaic” or a work cobbled together, a foray into postmodern undecidability? Six Mondays: July 12, 19, 26 and August 2, 9, 16, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. ET Online Class.
