The next-to-last volume of Proust’s novel In Search of Lost Time, consisting really of two books,  The Prisoner and The Fugitive, begins with the improbable  sojourn of an unmarried girl, Albertine, in the apartment of the novel’s narrator.  An exhausting, claustrophobic study of the duel of lovers, these volumes manage to include many events and people from the whole gamut of the narrator’s Parisian life.  The volumes do, nevertheless, represent the protagonist’s descent, comparable to Dante’s, into the nether reaches of damnation,  his distrust leading to lies which nearly destroy all belief, his grief putting at risk his sanity.  Revelations are never conclusive, nor can we trust our narrator’s word for his states of mind.  High points, on the other hand, include the narrator’s great moments of  aesthetic exaltation, responding to music and to Venice.

We will be using the Modern Library edition of Proust in class, and you will find it much easier to locate what we are talking about if you have this edition.
