Here is another series of classes under the main heading of attempting to understand the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) through literature and prose written by its authors, advocates, observers, critics, and supporters. This time we will read books by both Turkish and non-Turkish scholars about the Ottoman Empire; a great empire that stretched over thousands of miles and lasted for over 600 years. The Ottomans controlled much of Southeastern Europe, Western Asia, and Northern Africa between the 14th and early 20th centuries. And they left an indelible and unforgettable impact on the Middle East and North Africa which is still felt until the present time. In this course, we will start with an historical overview of its long history; discuss the nature of the Ottoman court, traditions, and art from a global perspective; and then discuss the end of the Ottoman empire via the story of a Turkish family, and the rise of Ataturk (father of the Turks) and the Republic of Turkey in 1923. Join us on this journey lasting 600 years where we will examine some of the factors underlying the modern history, politics, and culture in the MENA region today. Five Fridays: June 4, 18, July 9, 16, August 6 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. EST Online Class.
