In July 2017, writing for the New Yorker Abby Aguirre states that Octavia Butler had “sheer peculiar prescience” in her ability to envision pandemics, zealots in positions of leadership, and climate disasters. While her most popular novel, Kindred (1988), deals with time travel and slavery, Butler steps squarely into a “new-future dystopia” or what critics would label “Afrofuturism,” in Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents. Writing against the publishing industry’s belief that authors could not make Black characters central in science fiction, Butler wrote anyway and now has emerged as one of the most respected science fiction writers of the twentieth century.

We will explore Butler’s work and her unique contributions to science fiction with narratives that not only center Black characters but also Black women characters. We will also discuss Afrofuturism, and how it provides spaces for other non-white writers to add to the panoply of science fiction. Four Saturdays: September 18, 25, October 2, and 9, from noon to 2 p.m. ET
