Memoir, much like fiction, relies on literary tools such as character development, vivid scenes, structure and plot to craft a compelling storyline and produce evocative, page-turning, and novel-like final products. Yet the most powerful memoirs are those where you can witness the writer self-excavating—reaching beneath the surface to ask themselves probing questions. These writers take us on a journey of self-inquiry and ultimately self-discovery, making themselves emotionally vulnerable which in turn allows us to invest in their story while experiencing their transformation on an intimate level.

In this workshop, we will discuss several confessional memoirs written by women, as well as become familiar with techniques on how to get started on your own memoir. You will learn how to ‘get blood on the page’ and share your unique personal transformation narrative in a compelling way. The experience of writing a memoir is self-actualizing so this workshop would be of interest even to those who are not planning to pursue publication. I encourage participation, and we will have exercises, discussions and supportive group sharing. Weekly at-home writing assignments are required. Students will complete drafting and revising one 5-10 page memoir.

Four Thursdays: October 8, 15, 22 and 29, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Online Class.

Class limit is 15.
