Honoree Fanonne Jeffers brings the lyricism of a poet to the page of her first published novel The Love Songs of W.E. B. Du Bois, which examines multiple generations of an African American family from the Civil War to the twentieth century Civil Rights Movement to the present. This epic novel examines the trails and joys of Black life in the United States and invites the reader to explore the possibilities, plausibility, and contingencies of African Americans often negotiating a hostile world while equally privileging love and family.
