Dorothy Sayers, one of the first women in England to receive an Oxford degree, created one of the greatest and most loved fictional detectives: her aristocratic amateur sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey. The eleven Wimsey novels, written during and set in inter-war Britain of the 1920s and ‘30s, showcase the period in ways that remain much admired. We will read and discuss three of her Wimsey novels, Clouds of Witness (1926), The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club (1928), and Murder Must Advertise (1933), considering their portrait of the Wimsey family and the social world of post-World War I England.

Kara Keeling is a Professor of English at Christopher Newport University, where she has taught courses on children’s and YA literature, and 19th-century British poetry and novels for the past thirty years. She has a Ph.D. in Victorian British literature and has long been and enthusiastic reader of Sayers’ Lord Peter Wimsey novels. She resides in Virginia with her English professor husband and a cat who enjoys sleeping on their books and papers.
