ONLINE CLASS: Literary Journey into the Heart of France (20109)

Price:
$135 (10% off for members)

This class will take you into the heart of France through exploration of la France profonde as seen by four American writers who are long-term residents of France. French Spirits: A House, A Village, and a Love Affair in Burgundy by award-winning poet Jeffrey Greene is a lyrical, often humorous, and thoroughly engaging account of how Greene and his wife became (somewhat unexpectedly) the homeowners of an ancient presbytery in need of repair, and how they adjusted to the intimacy, for better or worse, of village life. In Paris to the Pyrenees: A Skeptic Pilgrim Walks the Way of St. James, David Downie tells the story of how he and his wife, photographer Alison Harris, set out on an inspired and inspiring journey on foot—a six-month, 750-mile trek across the heart of France—with the purpose of restoring his health, and the rich, multifaceted adventures that ensued. Final Transgression: One Woman’s Tragic Destiny in War-Torn France is a novel set in the Périgord during the Occupation of France during World War II—a historical period that continues to weigh heavily on French minds and hearts. Ending on a lighter note, and not so much in the heart, as on the “sleeve” of France, I’ll Never Be French (no matter what I do): Living in a Small Village in Brittany, Mark Greenside’s affectionate yet also often hilarious account of his part-time life in France will have us laughing, while also developing a deeper appreciation of not only the French, but the best aspects of being American as well.

Since travel to France is not possible for most people for the time being, this class offers a great way to “travel” across the French countryside and vicariously experience life in French villages in a way that you couldn't do even if you were there. No need to pack your bags, no jet lag, no airports--just join us! Five Fridays: October 2, 16, 30, November 13, 20, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Online Class.
