We’ll start with (Not Quite) Mastering the Art of French Living by Mark Greenside, who divides his time between northern California and a small town in Brittany. Greenside’s humorous recounting of his everyday adventures and misadventures in his little town offers a great deal of helpful perspective and “lessons learned” about driving, shopping, cooking, getting sick, and speaking French in la belle France. Next we’ll read Joie de Vivre: Secrets of Wining, Dining, and Romancing Like the French, in which Harriet Welty Rochefort shares the wisdom she has gathered in the course of living in France for nearly 50 years, married to a French husband and raising her family in Paris. The next two books we’ll read focus on the sometimes frustrating, always challenging, and occasionally triumphant experiences of learning the French language. William Alexander’s Flirting with French: Adventures in Pursuing a Language is a lighthearted approach to the subject, from the perspective of someone who took up this pursuit at the relatively advanced age of 57 (albeit with youthful optimism and determination.) His book offers insights into the science and psychology of language learning, as well as interesting glimpses into the history of the French language. Alice Kaplan’s French Lessons: A Memoir has been called “an intellectual coming of age.” Her story begins as a schoolgirl in Minnesota, continues on through her years at a boarding school in Switzerland, and follows her as she develops her career as a professor of French language and literature, translator, and literary critic. All four of these works offer valuable insights into French history, culture, and society, and will provide us with rich opportunities for discussing this endlessly fascinating people—and their beautiful language. Zoom visits will provide us with the opportunity to interact directly with some of the authors.
