Due to the spread of covid-19, this class will now meet using video technology. Your virtual meeting will take place at the scheduled time and will cover the planned content. Science fiction is not just about men in a lab or robots in space--it's also about us, all of us, our families and our communities. Developments in science and technology affect people of all genders, races, and nationalities, so we should all have a voice in exploring the changes we'll face. What lies in your future? How will climate change, genetic manipulation, or artificial intelligence affect you in the decades to come? Join us to start imagining--and writing--the world of the future!

The course will start with a definition of what we mean by speculative (science fiction vs. fantasy, magical realism, fabulist fiction, etc), listing well-known examples as a frame of reference, and introducing lesser known diverse writers in the same areas. Writing exercises will include a warm up stemming from a "what-if" of the participant’s interest, a discussion of the elements of fiction, and writing to prompts to demonstrate how to bring those elements of strong literary fiction into science fiction themes. Sunday: March 29 from 2 to 5 p.m. Online Class
