Halldor Laxness is both a writer’s writer and one of Iceland’s cherished national treasures. He won the 1955 Nobel prize in Literature, was widely read in his day, and though his fame has faded he continues to be the favorite of authors and literature nerds everywhere. A New Yorker essay last year celebrated a Laxness renaissance as Vintage re-releases his best work. Let’s join in by reading his most renowned novel, Independent People.  More than one reviewer has dubbed it the book that you can never forget. Tolstoyan in scope and depth, a mash-up of Nordic saga and modernism, it’s no beach read. It chronicles the life of one humble, stubborn Icelandic sheep farmer in a heart-rending father-daughter story of pathos, irony, humor, and socialism. Our central focus will be on the text itself, taking two weeks between classes to allow us to read approximately 150 pages. But we’ll also look at some critical essays and learn a few things about Laxness himself.

Helen Hooper, a fiction writer, was a Stegner Fellow at Stanford University. She has published stories in American Short Fiction, The Common, The Hopkins Review, Bellevue Literary Review and elsewhere. She was MacDowell Colony fellow, a Kenyon Review Peter Taylor fellow and holds an MFA from Warren Wilson College and a BA from Johns Hopkins. She has taught literature and creative writing at Stanford and other universities and at the middle and high school levels. She is now writing a novel.
