Hilary Mantel’s trilogy on the life and times of Thomas Cromwell has revealed to the world that historical novels can be works of subtle beauty, disturbing emotion, and acute historical penetration even when we know the ‘story.’  This third volume of the Wolf Hall threesome, The Mirror and the Light, has to include material more diffuse than the rise and fall of Anne Boleyn, but it continues Mantel’s study of statesmanship, and of the mix of loyalty, principle and feeling in one mind, one life. As with Shakespeare one can read through Mantel scenes many times wondering what is unsaid, what is meant. Mantel, herself a rigorous scholar as well as a writer of wit and intelligence who enjoys the perverse, trains us through her tireless interrogation of a famous figure, not to expect simple lessons from history. Four Mondays: June 1, 8, 15, 22, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Online Class.
