ONLINE CLASS: George Eliot's Daniel Deronda (22102)

This class will read Daniel Deronda, George Eliot’s last novel, published in 1876. Like her masterpiece Middlemarch, it is an ambitious and far-reaching multi-plot novel (“I meant everything in the book to be related to everything else there,” she once wrote about it). Our class will discuss it book-by-book, in all its nearly 900-page glory, and will explore its many themes, not only its approach to what her contemporaries called the “Jewish question,” for which it is justifiably so well known, but also its emphasis on ideas of beauty, art, love, marriage, risk, and finding purpose in life.
