You’ve written essays about your life or someone close to you. Now it’s time to edit and revise, perhaps with an eye toward publication. In this class, you will workshop and edit an essay by examining what makes a personal essay resonate beyond the immediate or personal experience, explore ways to find a hook for your essay, and learn how to use fiction techniques to sharpen the details and the narrative. Participants will read and discuss each other’s work, as well as use prompts and exercises to devise strategies to revise their drafts.

Donna Hemans is the author of three novels, River Woman, Tea by the Sea, and The House of Plain Truth (forthcoming in February 2024). Her short fiction and essays have appeared in Slice, Electric Literature, Ms. Magazine, The Rumpus, Crab Orchard Review, among others. She received her undergraduate degree in English and Media Studies from Fordham University and an MFA from American University. She lives in Maryland, and is also the owner of DC Writers Room, a co-working studio for writers based in Washington, D.C.
