The primary objective of this course is to examine the political and cultural underpinnings of children’s literature. In our discussions, we will explore a classic set of children’s books, past and present, to understand the ways in which children’s stories both shape and are shaped by political, cultural, historical forces. Whether it is a Golden Age text set in Victorian Britain (Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland) or futuristic and magical stories written in the 1990s (Lois Lowry’s The Giver and J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone), children’s literature serves as an instructive lens through which we can evaluate the significance of culture, politics, and prose in our lives. Three Thursdays: February 25, March 4, 11, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Online Class.
